Aughrim
This is a photograph of Aughrim village, in the east of the county, near Ballinasloe. The bloodiest battle ever fought on Irish soil, the Battle of Aughrim, was fought here in July 1691. An Irish army faced a Williamite army in the day long battle during which there were 7,000 casualties.
