Lynch Window

view of lynch window

This is a photograph of the Lynch Window in Market Street, Galway, beside St. Nicholas Collegiate Church. The window is the upper left one.

The story goes that the mayor of Galway, James Lynch FitzStephen, hung his son from this window in 1493. His son had killed a Spaniard who was staying with the family. The mayor considered the enforcement of the law important enough to hang his son from the window of the family home.
